  • Hi Vince,

The Ducato- engine has no glow plugs in each cylinder. Instead it uses a 'flame start'- device (don't know the exact designation in English). This device only operates below a certain temperature (I assume, below zero degrees Celsius). It works with an additional diesel- injector in the inlet manifold and a glow- plug. Before you start, the glow plug has to be heated. During engine cranking and the first seconds of running, Diesel is injected which should be ignited at the glow plug, producing a flame (hence the name) and therefore heating the air.

To test, if the flame start device is operating correctly, do pre- glowing (lamp in the dashboard is lit and then starts blinking when ready). Start the engine and touch the inlet- manifold, if it gets warm, the flame is burning. If the glow- plug isn't working, Diesel would be injected but then burned by the engine, resulting in smoke and bad smell.

These 'flame-start'- devices are failing regularly. The control- circuitry is located in a small grey box, mounted near the battery. The electric glow- plug can be burnt (also check fuse) and in many cases the control- box is broken. AFAIK these boxes are no longer produced for the 280/290- types. I've seen in the forum that many users have disarmed the device and start their engines without it. As long as the compression of the engine is good, this will work. Others have replaced it with their own control- circuits.....

  • Thank you both: caterham and bagcabasi!

I think i have: Beru flame start glow plug

    http://beru.federalmogul.com/products/diese…ting-systems-gf

I have it tested directly on battery and it works, red smoking hot in 2-3 seconds.

My control board looks like Bitron 2044029 does anyone have any schematics or pin outs?

    Thanks...
